After years of being on every diet around, I’ve yet to conquer the holidays. It’s time for a little bit of grace, post-holiday detox foods and a plan to get back on track. According to Web MD, detox foods can help you clear out your pipes and jump-start your body.

Detox Foods

Since I’m not a health expert, you’ll want to check with your doctor before starting any diet or health program. Always drink plenty of water and ensure your detox foods are clean and prepared per the USDA standards.

The combination of detox foods along with my resolve to eliminate processed foods for the week helps me quickly drop 2-3 pounds in a matter of days. A lot of the weight is water weight, as my body no longer wants to hold on to excess water and doesn’t have to work as hard to process the good food that I eat. A focused week of healthy eating usually does the trick to getting me back in the swing of following my weight watchers plan.

Here’s my list of detox foods for the week.

  • Water – I prefer filtered water over Phoenix water any day. I use reverse osmosis to filter out the crap and provide my family with water that doesn’t taste like it came from a hose. I like to add a slice of lemon, orange or other fruit to infuse the water with a bit of flavor.
  • Lemon Water – Squeeze a slice of lemon into a cup of warm water first thing in the morning to prepare my digestive system.
  • Green Tea – Green tea is the least processed tea and provides antioxidants.
  • Green Juice – I start my day off with a small glass of green juice. I use my Omega juicer and add spinach, a couple slices of green apple and lemon, ¼ cucumber, parsley and a teaspoon of fresh ginger.

  • Salad
  • Cabbage
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Onions
  • Carrots
  • Zucchini
  • Sweet potato
Honestly, the more vegetables I eat, the better my week goes. I put any vegetable that I like to eat on my detox food list regardless of their detox properties.

  • Oranges
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Berries
  • Pineapple
  • Lemon
  • Strawberries
  • Mangos
Primarily foods that are high in antioxidants, like vitamin C, can help improve liver function. I try to buy organic when possible. Otherwise, I peel and wash everything.

  • Almonds
  • Cashews

  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Chicken

  • Brown rice
  • Zucchini (Used instead of grains and noodles)

  • Almond milk
  • Organic milk

I realize that many detox diets don’t allow foods like tuna, oranges, grapes and tomatoes. If you’re following a special diet, then stick with what works for you. This list is what works for me, and everyone is different.

The magic of my post-holiday detox foods list is more about what I’m not putting in my body rather than what I am. Obviously healthy foods are the key to losing weight, but eliminating as much processed food as possible is what really helps me drop the holiday weight gain and gain the momentum to keep going strong.
